Crimps and Gains: 7 Pasty Fillings That Pack More Protein Than Your Post-Gym Shake
There's a particular kind of sadness that comes with choosing between your pasty and your protein goals. We've felt it. Standing in the meal deal aisle, sighing at the sad chicken salad, eyeing the bakery counter with longing.
Well, we're here to tell you: you don't have to choose. The humble pasty is far more adaptable than tradition would have you believe, and with a few clever swaps, you can tuck into something properly indulgent that also earns its place in your meal prep rotation.
Here are seven fillings we've tested (extensively — someone has to do it) that deliver on protein without tasting like a punishment.
1. Lean Beef & Red Onion
The classic, but make it macro-friendly. Swap fatty mince for 5% fat beef mince, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce and a spoonful of wholegrain mustard, and you'd struggle to notice the difference.
Per serving: ~34g protein, 420 kcal
The trick is cooking the mince low and slow with finely chopped mushrooms — they add umami depth and moisture that lean beef often lacks.
2. Chicken, Leek & Cottage Cheese
This one surprised us. Blitzed cottage cheese melts into the leek and chicken mixture like a proper cream sauce, bringing around 25g of protein per 100g and a silky texture that feels positively decadent.
Per serving: ~38g protein, 390 kcal
Season generously — cottage cheese is mild, so it needs thyme, black pepper and a little nutmeg to sing.
3. Butterbean & Smoked Paprika
Vegetarian and thriving. Butterbeans mashed with smoked paprika, garlic and a crumble of feta give a creamy, hearty filling with a proper savoury backbone.
Per serving: ~19g protein, 350 kcal
Add toasted sunflower seeds for crunch and an extra protein nudge.
4. Turkey, Spinach & Sundried Tomato
Turkey mince is criminally underrated in pasty form. Mixed with wilted spinach and chopped sundried tomatoes, it's a Mediterranean holiday wrapped in pastry.
Per serving: ~31g protein, 370 kcal
5. Smoked Haddock & Spring Onion
Fish pasties deserve more love. Smoked haddock poached in a little milk, flaked with spring onions and a touch of mustard — light, flaky, and brilliant for your recovery day.
Per serving: ~29g protein, 340 kcal
6. Lentil, Chestnut & Sage
Autumn in a crimp. Green lentils and chopped chestnuts with fresh sage make a filling so satisfying your carnivore friends will be asking for a taste.
Per serving: ~18g protein, 360 kcal
7. Halloumi & Roasted Pepper
Griddled halloumi with sweet roasted peppers and a smear of harissa. Salty, sweet, slightly spicy — dangerously moreish.
Per serving: ~24g protein, 410 kcal
Keeping It Crisp With Leaner Fillings
Lean fillings release more water, and soggy pastry is where dreams go to die. Our fixes:
- Thicken smartly. A teaspoon of ground oats or polenta in the filling absorbs excess moisture without adding heaviness.
- Cool before filling. Never wrap warm filling in raw pastry — steam is the enemy of crisp.
- Brush with egg and bake hot. 200°C fan for the first 15 minutes gives you that shatteringly crisp base.
- Elevate your bake. A wire rack or the oven's upper shelf keeps the underside from going pale and damp.
The Meal Prep Win
All seven fillings freeze beautifully, either as assembled unbaked pasties (bake from frozen, add 10 minutes) or as filling alone for a midweek wrap-and-go. Batch a double quantity on Sunday and your gym bag lunch is sorted until Thursday.
Comfort food that works as hard as you do. That's the pasty, reinvented.
